OPTICS

Among the many scientific contributions of Isaac Newton, one is that of Optics. Newton devised the first reflecting telescope, which are widely used today in the field of Astronomy and discovered that light was made up of an array of coloured rays.

One of his experiments conducted during this study, was when Isaac used a prism to split white light into the spectrum of colours we are familiar with today. He developed the corpuscular theory of light, which states that all sources of light, emit large quantities of micrscopic projectile-like particles known as corpuscles and that these partciles are elastic, rigid and weightless.

Newton is arguably the first person to understand the rainbow as well as used a curved mirror in a telescope to prevent light begin broken up into unwanted colours. He identified that light rays were oblong-shaped, instead of circular as was believed  beforehand, because of their varying refrangibility.

All of his work and research was published in 'Optiks'  in 1704.
